The complicated birth of HOUSE OF EXORCISM began in 1973 with the film LISA & THE DEVIL, written/directed by the legendary Mario Bava, and featuring his trademark dreamy, surrealistic style. Lisa, Francis, Sophia and chauffeur George are invited in by the rich but strange family, the Countess and her son Max, where Mr. Leandro turns out to be the butler. This version is a whole different movie, mainly told in flashback with many new scenes shot and added in, and Robert Alda playing a priest charged with exorcising Lisa. Though we learn later that the wax dummies “do” have a purpose within the plotline. This little ditty features the talents of Telly Savalas, and Elke Sommer. It initially had some distributor issues but was later released in the US. When the tour brings them to a mural painting of the devil carrying people to the underworld, Lisa is distracted by a melody which she follows to a little shop. Though it’s a visceral film, the graphic horror isn’t forgotten and there are some brutal deaths with some gore and blood. Lisa and the Devil or Lisa e il diavolo is a surrealistic Italian horror film where illusion and reality collide. The house is owned by a blind countess played by actress Alida Valli and is shared with her son Max (Alessio Orano) who has a unrelenting fascination with Lisa and some prior connection they shared. The film is a big mystery, but never fully explained and the ending makes it all the more mysterious.
Elke Sommer plays Lisa Reiner a tourist who just so happens upon an old mansion when she accepts a ride from strangers. One highlight in this movie contains a moment where a cheating wife continually rolls over her husbands head while she drives back and forth over it. It never becomes clear why there are mannequins, what for and how they came to be. Lisa and the Devil is available on DVD from CheezyFlicks Made in 1974, the film tells the story of Lisa (Elke Sommer) an American tourist in a small Spanish village who gets seperated from her tour group.
This wax figure reappears several times in the beginning as Leandro continues to carry it around like a lost puppy dog. This film is focused purely on the dreamlike visuals, creating a surreal and visceral atmosphere. The film uses some brilliant settings from the start. He is played by the infamous Telly Savalas (Kojak) and, as a fun nod, also has a Lolly Pop in his mouth.
