Wild River State Park's bird list documents 200 species that can be viewed at different times throughout the year.
The soil in the park is quite sandy from the sediments that accumulated in this now-vanished lake. The lumber industry was bedeviled by massive log jams in 1867, 1877, 1883, and 1886. With calm stretches of serene wild-life viewing and moments of excitement on the stronger currents of the river, paddlers won't be disappointed in their time on the water.

Gates were opened at two-week intervals to send a steady supply of lumber to Stillwater. These efforts involve controlled burning to reduce built-up thatch and clearing plantations of farmer-introduced pines. Anglers fish the river for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and catfish. In the 1940s public sentiment turned against the dam because of its impacts on recreation and conservation.
The Buckthorn-Free Zone initiative allows volunteers to claim a portion, or "zone", of the park as their own with the responsibility of eventually making it buckthorn-free. Scattered throughout the park are seven backpacking campsites and four canoe campsites along the St. Croix River.
The park contains a seasonal dump station, which is situated at the entrance of the main campground. This is overlain by a thick layer of glacial debris.
The horse campground consists of 20 campsites, 15 of which offer electrical hookups.
Be aware that dehydration can be a problem with physical exertion even in the cold weather, so make sure to pack plenty of drinking water along with your trail map. Wild River State Park is located along 18 miles of the beautiful St. Croix River.

You will then paddle 10 miles which takes approximately 4-5 hours in normal wind and water conditions and finish at Wild River State Park where your car is conveniently parked. Nice secluded campsites.

The main pet-friendly campground consists of 94 camp sites that are spread across five separate loops, 34 of which have electrical hookups for RVs. Whether you are tent camping or brought the big rig with your boat in tow, Wild River State Park is perfect for some quality float time. The loop is about 4 miles of well-established trail and is very popular on the weekends.
We camped one night in a tent (non electric #81 D loop). Drinking water stations are located throughout each loop as well as restrooms with seasonal showering facilities. Fishing on the St. Croix National Wild and Scenic River within the park is perfect from the shore or off a boat. The land was once home to Ojibwe and Dakota people before European settlers logged and farmed it. Exhibits in the center teach visitors about the local ecosystem and how to be environmentally responsible. A state trail pass is required on certain trails.
If you go in late winter, you may even see a few sleepy bears coming out of hibernation.
